“SPEAK!” – Speak Love

God's love compelled Him to the manger

“God’s love compelled Him
To suffer great loss.”

When God gave me this poem, those words held me — it wasn’t “God’s love comforted Him,” not “God’s love inspired Him.” But God’s love compelled Him. A love with no choice in it but to act. He couldn’t stay where He was and love us. Love moved Him — to a manger in Bethlehem, to a cross outside Jerusalem, to great loss. That’s what love does: it moves.

God's love compelled Him to the cross

And that’s why the poem starts by challenging our silence:

“We must not remain silent
Through doubt or through fear”

Doubt and fear. Those are the two stumbling blocks. Fear whispers: what if they don’t want to hear it? What if I say it wrong? What if they think I’m too much? Doubt whispers: does anyone even want to hear it? Who am I to share? And behind those whispers sits the heaviest doubt of all — the one that says, what if I am rejected.

Here’s what I’ve come to understand: love that is never given is not love — it’s sentiment.

“By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” (1 John 3:16)

That’s the measure. His love for us wasn’t a feeling, it was commitment — it was action — it was giving — “He gave His life for us / To show that He cared.” Caring proved itself at the cross. For us, the measure is smaller but the shape is the same: love speaks, love moves, love gives. Sentiment sits still. Love doesn’t.

And here’s the part I keep coming back to: the same compulsion that moved Him is the one that moves us now. “For the love of Christ compels us” (2 Corinthians 5:14 NKJV). The word is the same — compelled. His love put Him on the cross; His love in us inspires us to act. We’re not being asked to work up the courage. We’re being carried by the same love that carried Him.

“For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that One died for all, therefore all died. And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died for them and was raised again. … All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:” (2 Corinthians 5:14-15,18)

The poem tells us the purpose and power of God’s love:

“He sent us His Son
To free us from sin
He left us His Spirit
To draw us to Him”

We are not sent out empty-handed. He gave the Son to save us, and He left the Spirit to walk with us. When you speak love into someone’s life, you are not performing — the Spirit is drawing, the same way He drew you. Your words are just the treasure He shares through a yielded vessel.

Because that is what we are — vessels:

“This treasure isn’t ours
It is meant to be shared”

“We have this treasure in earthen vessels” (2 Corinthians 4:7). We were never meant to hold onto it. We are a vessel that overflows with His blessing. Every blessing you’ve received — the grace that saved you, the peace that held you, the new life He keeps giving “as we seek him each day” — was poured into you so it could pour out to others through you. Shared treasure multiplies the blessing.

I’ve seen what it looks like when love refuses to stay silent. The night Kristen died, an off-duty nurse — a stranger — stepped out of the crowd and stayed with our daughter until the paramedics arrived. She didn’t owe us anything. She just overflowed with care for our daughter. The day after, when I finally told Julie the struggle I’d been carrying the previous two months, she said, “I’m so sorry you had to carry that burden by yourself — we will continue the journey together.” Love that won’t stay silent. Love that steps into the pain instead of passing by it. That’s the love the poem is calling us to speak.

“Speak love into others
Let Him show the way”

Notice: speak — and let Him show the way. You bring the willingness; He brings the words, the timing, the open door — the open heart. You don’t have to be eloquent. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You have to yield to His Spirit. “The world needs a Savior / And His word they must hear” — and He’s chosen your voice to carry it.

So here’s what I’m asking you to do this week: speak His love into someone’s life on purpose. Not a sentiment — love in action with words to carry it. The text you keep meaning to send. The prayer you keep meaning to offer. The truth about what He’s done for you, shared with someone who needs to hear it. Let the Spirit show the way. Watch what He does with it.

“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.” (1 Corinthians 3:6-7)

You don’t need a platform to change a life. You need a compelled heart. His love compelled Him to suffer great loss — and that same love, poured into you, is meant to overflow out of you.

“Speak Love!”

“He gave His life for us
To show that He cared.”

A moment to reflect:

  • What fear or doubt has been keeping you silent — and who is waiting for you to share the blessing?
  • When you picture God’s love compelling you, where does it want to move you this week?
  • What treasure has He poured into you that you’ve been holding in your vessel?

A prayer to pray:

Jesus, You are Love. Forgive me for the silences — the fear that kept my mouth closed and the doubt that kept my treasure locked away. Compel me the way You were compelled. Let Your Spirit show the way as I speak Your love into others. Make me a vessel, not a vault. Your life for mine — and mine, poured out for others. Amen.

SPEAK LOVE

We must not be silent
Through doubt or through fear
The world needs a Savior
And His word they must hear

By faith we are saved
Through the grace of the cross
God’s love compelled Him
To suffer great loss

He sent us His Son
To free us from sin
He left us His Spirit
To draw us to Him

Speak love into others
Let Him show the way
He gives us new life
As we seek him each day

This treasure isn’t ours
It is meant to be shared
He gave His life for us
To show that He cared
